It is an archeological museum located in the center of Cairo in Tahrir Square, where the famous revolution of 2011 took place to overthrow President Mubarak.
The Egyptian Museum was built by the French with neoclassical style, was opened in 1902 by the Egyptian government with the aim of protecting the monuments and archaeological legacy of the country, extracted from the temples and tombs of the Ancient Egyptians in Luxor and Aswan, Sakkra and other Egyptian provinces.
This museum has 136 objects and is divided into two floors
On the first floor objects are displayed, they are statues, sarcophagi, instruments and personal belongings from 4000 years ago that date back to the Old Empire, the Middle Empire and the New Empire, they are classified in chronological order.
The second floor is The Treasure of Tutankhamen, discovered in his tomb in The Valley of the Kings in Luxor and The Hall of the Mummies that collects the mummified bodies of the most important pharaohs in the history of Egypt.
New museum in 2020
Due to the constant archaeological discoveries in the Egyptian tombs until today, the Museum is full of objects, adding up to 150,000 pieces. Therefore, the government decided to build another museum: The Great Egyptian Museum that will be located near the Pyramids of Giza becoming the largest archaeological museum in the world and is believed to be open for the public in 2020.
